What Are Your Core Values?

In working with women entrepreneurs over the years I have seen so many that struggle with achieving the goals they set for themselves. One of the main reasons they struggle is they unintentionally set goals that are not in-line with their core values. It is so important to become crystal clear about what is important to you (your core values) BEFORE you set your goals.

Unfortunately sometimes the goals we set aren’t what WE want at all and after a while we just don't stay committed to taking the actions necessary to achieve them. Many don't realize that often the goals WE set are what others want for us, such as a parent or spouse. Or I have seen, and have experienced this myself, wanting what others have because it looks like success. This is an empty pursuit of a goal that will ultimately lead to failure.

On each Women’s Business Success Show I start off my interview by asking our Special Guest to tell us what success means to them. Each guest answers differently and what I have noticed is they define success by what is most important to them. If you listen carefully at the words they use in their definition of success it will clarify what they value most (their core values).

For example, when I asked Wealth Mentor, Linda P Jones what success means to her, she said, “Achievement of my life’s purpose which is to positively impact as many people as possible, create financial freedom and love.” From her answer, it is clear that Linda values achievement, purpose, positive impact, financial freedom and love.

Think about what success means to you and write down your definition in 2-3 sentences. Next, pick out the key words in your answer to find your core values. Next, set (or look over) your goals to be sure that they are directly in-line with your core values!

What are your top 5 Core Values? Share them on our
Follow Up Made Simple!

Last week I attended a LIVE EVENT and connected with 20-30 amazing women entrepreneurs that I now NEED to follow up with.

How many times has this happened to you?

You attend a fabulous LIVE EVENT and connect with great people with the best intentions to follow up when you got back to the office. However, once you are back, your TO DO LIST calls and that pile of business cards just sits on your desk.

This is a common problem that can easily be solved with:

3 Steps to Follow Up Made Simple

1. While at the event collecting business cards use a coding system to remember those that are the most important people you want to follow up with. This coding system could simply be bending a corner or writing an A on the card. You don't need to follow up with everyone that you spoke with, just those that may be potential clients or strategic partners.

2. Schedule 60 minutes or so in your calendar for follow up on the next "in office day" following the LIVE EVENT. During that time you will send an email to each person you wanted to follow up with to schedule a time to talk to get to know them better to see how you might be able to help them.

3. Nothing wastes more time than an endless game of phone tag or back & forth emails to find a day/time for you to connect. The easiest way to schedule a time to connect is by using an online scheduling service, like Time Trade. This automated service allows you to send a link to give someone access to your calendar with the ability to schedule a time that works for them. It even automatically places the appointment on your calendar and sends them a reminder email the day before the scheduled call.

Follow up is a vital part of your success in business, why not make it simple!

Do you have any tips for following up? If so, please share them on our Association of Women Entrepreneurs Facebook Fan Page!
Starting is the hardest part!

"The start is what stops most people." ~Don Shula

Once you are clear about where you want to go it is time to start to take action!

Often people hesitate to take action because they aren't sure exactly what they need to do to get started. My suggestion is to just start doing something, anything that will get you going! Once you start you will build momentum and you'll be unstoppable!

WE want to support you in taking action...Answer this Q on our Association of Women Entrepreneurs Facebook Fan Page:

"What is it that you've been talking about doing and haven't yet started and what 1 action WILL you take this week to START?"

Top 3 Time Management Strategies

Recently WE asked the entrepreneurs that are a part of our Association of Women Entrepreneurs Community:

What is the biggest struggle/challenge you face in your business?

Most of the responses WE received centered around marketing and time management. So in this week's blog post WE decided to share our Top 3 Time Management Strategies!

"Lost time is never found again." ~Benjamin Franklin

Let's face it, managing your time in an effective way is essential to your success in business and life. Do you feel that you could be more efficient and productive each day? Do you feel like you are wasting time and aren't sure how to stop the feeling of "running in circles" you are experiencing?

If so, keep reading and pick at least 1 new strategy below to implement to help you begin to maximize your time!

Schedule Work Hours
Decide how many hours you want to work each week. Next, decide on the specific days and how many hours each day you want to work. Lastly, designate specific hours for each work day. Many people hesitate to do this because they feel they work for themselves and they want the freedom to work when they want. Well, the beautiful part about scheduling your work hours is that you are also clear about when you have free time!!

Time Block
For those of you that already have scheduled work hours, KUDOS to you! Now you can get even more organized with your time by being very deliberate about how you will spend your scheduled work hours.

Do you sometimes feel like you don't know what to do during your scheduled work hours? Or do you feel you have so much to do that you don't even know where to begin?

First decide on the results you want to achieve for the week and create a TO DO LIST outlining the tasks you need to complete to achieve the results you want. Once you add a task to your TO DO LIST you will then block time in your calendar for the work week where you will actually complete the task. To be more productive you can group "like tasks" together, such as running errands.

There may be tasks that you need to do each day, week or month and you can set a scheduled recurring time in your calendar to ensure these tasks are completed. For example, each Monday from 10am-12pm I spend time preparing my radio show and writing my blog and enewsletter for the week.

Daily Check-In & Wrap Up
One of the best ways to stay organized and productive each day is to be consistent with a Daily Check-In & Wrap Up. Let's start with the Wrap Up, this is a small amount of time at the end of each day to look over your TO DO LIST and check off what has been done. Most importantly you want to look at those tasks that didn't get completed on your TO DO LIST. Tasks that didn't get done need to be moved to another day and time. Also, this is the time to check your Tickler File and look over your time blocks for the following day.

First thing at the start of your scheduled work day you will begin with a Daily Check-In. This is a small amount of time where you will look over your day and decide on the TOP 5 MOST IMPORTANT TASKS you NEED to do that day. This way if your day doesn't go as planned, which often happens, you know what things you NEED to focus on and what things can wait to be completed on another day.

What WE have found is these are the 3 very best ways to maximize your time and be more productive each and every day!

Do you have any Time Management Tips you can share with our WE Community?
The first time I was a guest on Fred's show in late 2011 (see us pictured here) it was my very 1st TV Interview!! Yes, I started out nervous, but, by the time the camera started rolling I was hooked! Being on TV was so much fun and I felt that it was a great way for me to add value and get my message out to many people at once! You can see that first interview here:
Out of the Rough - Tera McHugh Interview

After that first interview was over I left with a desire and an idea that someday I wanted to be Fred's co-host. After my 2nd interview with Fred in early 2012 WE sat down to discuss marketing strategies. It was that day that Fred asked if I would like to be his co-host and right there my desire became my reality!! The commitment Fred has to his audience is incredible, his ethics and professionalism were what helped me to decide that partnering with him would be a great decision for me & WE!

The best way to gain more exposure for your business is through Strategic Partnerships and WE hope this example inspires you to create these types of relationships for your own business!
Think about the goals you have set for 2012 and if you haven't set any goals yet, do it now! Take a minute to jot down a few things you'd like to achieve this year. WE will wait.....

OK, now think about how much you really want those goals, I mean REALLY want them! If you find that a goal isn't that important to you, you probably won't stay that committed to seeing it completed. However, the more you can get connected to WHY you want this goal accomplished and if the desire is strong enough then you will NEVER GIVE UP until you have achieved it. This is why some goals just don't ever seem to happen, your desire just isn't that strong.

Look at your list of goals again and pick out those that you have a strong desire to accomplish. Think about how accomplishing these goals will change your life, your families life and your business. Post them up & look at them EVERYDAY! What you will find is that the more you focus on these goals the more opportunities will begin to come your way. Also, the more connected you can stay to WHY you want to achieve these goals the more committed you will be even when things get tough, you will NEVER GIVE UP!

Share your TOP 2012 Goal on our AofWE Fan Page so WE can support you in achieving it!!

This week I encourage you to make a list of ALL the goals you have achieved in the last week, 30 days, 6 months or year. Next, take some time to reflect on the hard work and dedication that it took for you to accomplish your goals. Acknowledge yourself for a job well done and at the very least, give yourself a pat on the back! Allow yourself time to celebrate, even if only for a few minutes.

Share your accomplishments on our Facebook Fan Page, so that WE can celebrate with you!!
Make YOUR Dreams Come Into Reality

"We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort." ~Jesse Owens

Each week on our Women's Business Success Show I ask our Special Guest what success means to them. The reason I ask this question is because over the years I have seen so many entrepreneurs that have gotten caught up in striving to achieve the success that OTHERS have (myself included) and not defining what success truly means to them.

Honestly, what I personally had to do was unsubscribe from all the enewsletters sent by "experts" that were doing their absolute best to sell me on their "fabulous life". What was happening was I was starting to feel anxious about what I "wasn't" doing and it kept me from focusing on those things I needed to do to lead me to MY success.

To help you get to the core of what it is you really want, take a minute to write down all the ways you love to spend your time, what you like to do and who you like to do it with. Take a look at each area of your life and what it is you want. My guess is when you discover this you will be determined, dedicated, disciplined and will give those things ALL your effort.

Want to learn more about the 8 areas of life & how to set goals for dreams for each area? Join our Association of Women Entrepreneurs Community to receive our free Business Success Formula Women Entrepreneurs Handbooklet!
Formula for Success

Quote of the Week
"Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It's quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You're thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But, it isn't at all...You can be discouraged by failure - or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember that's where you find success.
On the far side." ~Thomas J. Watson

Last week WE discussed problems and how to find solutions for the HIGH QUALITY PROBLEMS in your business and life. Well, I am on a kind of theme here, this week WE are discussing FAILURE!

Most of the time when you aren't taking action on something it is probably because of a basic fear of failure! It is sad to think how much isn't getting done because people are afraid to put what isn't perfect out there. Well, actually the world doesn't need or want it to be perfect. Perfect is unrealistic, instead it's better to strive for excellent!!

This last month I had my "first" bootcamp event, what many people don't know is that I actually did a small bootcamp event last year that was about 20 or so people and in my eyes a HUGE FAILURE! Did people benefit from last year's event, YES, it was actually a great event. However, there were many things I felt were "failures" and WOW did I learn so much from that experience! Now, if I just decided to give up & quit because it wasn't perfect, well, I wouldn't be where I am today! Now, are there things I want to improve on from this year's bootcamp, YES and I'm thrilled about the excellence WE will create at the August 2012 bootcamp!!

Remember, DONE is better than PERFECT! It's something that I heard over and over again at the Author 101 University Event I just attended. So, what is the thing you have been putting off getting out there because it isn't quite perfect? Take action on it now and let me know how I or WE might be able to help you...

Share it with us NOW on our: AofWE Facebook Fan Page
HIGH Quality Problems

"I am grateful for all of my problems. After each
one was overcome, I became stronger and more
able to meet those that were still to come. I grew
in all my difficulties."
~James Cash Penney 1875-1971
Founder J.C. Penney Stores

The quality of your life is dictated by the quality
of your problems! Low quality problems are those
that never seem to get solved. HIGH QUALITY
PROBLEMS are those that, when you find a
solution, you take your business or life to another level!

WE encourage you to focus on finding solutions for the HIGH QUALITY
PROBLEMS in your business and life!

1) Identify the URGENT HIGH QUALITY PROBLEM you have in your life.

2) Find someone to share your HIGH QUALITY PROBLEM with to
help you begin to imagine resources and solutions to solve the
problem. Often it can be difficult to find a solution for a problem
with the same thinking you had when you created the problem.
Receiving input from others can help you view the problem from
another angle to locate a solution.

3) Take ACTION! You may start with a "not-so-right" solution,
however, once you begin to take action, you will soon connect
to the "right" resource to lead you to the "right" solution!

Share your HIGH QUALITY PROBLEM on our Facebook Fan Page
to connect to the resources you need to succeed: AofWE FB
How to Decide Which Live Events You Should Attend

How to Decide Which Live Events You Should Attend
by Tera McHugh

Over the course of the year I probably attend 4-10 major events as an attendee. Back in 2005 I attended my first LIVE seminar event & I was hooked!

The feeling I had when I left that seminar and the strategies, connections and results that came out of it were enough to convince me that attending LIVE events needed to be a part of my life.

Actually, attending that LIVE event near San Diego back in 2005 led me to starting the Association of Women Entrepreneurs, but, that is a post for a different day!

There are so many reasons why should attend LIVE events, which I wrote about in last weeks post: Why Should You Attend Live Events?

This post will focus on how to decide which LIVE events to invest your time and money in. With my experience of producing events for the last 6 years I have learned why people register for events and why they don't. Here are the top 3 reasons...

1) Topic - Is the topic of the event something you are interested in learning about? Ask yourself, if this topic is something I need to move me forward in my business & life RIGHT NOW or could these skills or strategies enhance my business or life at this time? If you are going to be taking time and money from your business, make sure the topic is something you need to learn.

2) Featured Speakers - Learn from those that are where you want to be. Find a coach, consultant or mentor that is sharing their own step-by-step system on how to get where you want to go. Do a bit of research on the person presenting and think about how you might benefit from learning from or connecting with them.

3) Attendees - Typically if the topic is something of interest to you and it is presented by a fairly competent presenter, the room will be filled with other people just like you. Many times I have gone to a LIVE event and what I got most from the experience were the connections I made at the event. Be prepared to build quality relationships with the other people attending.

Many people will make the mistake of deciding if they are going to attend a LIVE event by looking at the price and location. By this I mean, the cost is low and the location is close. If these are factors by which you base your decision of whether or not you will attend on, well, you most likely will waste time and money. Often times you may need to invest and travel to get quality education and I'm telling you it is worth investing in LIVE events for your success & the success of your business!
Why Should You Attend Live Events?

Why Should You Attend Live Events?
By Tera McHugh

It always surprises me when I meet a business owner and they tell me that they have never attended a live event. There are so many reasons why it is important for business owners to make the time to attend live events.

Here are my top 3 reasons…

Get out of working IN your business to work ON your business
We can get caught up in the day-to-day operations of running our businesses and may miss out on learning about valuable improvements that can make a significant impact to our bottom line. By making the time to attend business development events you will allow your mind the space to identify changes you can make or new strategies you can implement.

Continue to learn and grow
Being a lifelong learner improves the quality of your life and business. When you attend live events you are exposed to the most up-to-date information and technology to help keep you moving forward.

If you aren’t learning and growing you are dying and the same applies to your business. If you aren’t learning new strategies to keep your business on the cutting edge, your business is essentially dying. By attending live events you can learn from speakers or connect with people that are aware of what you need to implement into your business for positive growth.

Connecting with people in-person
The strength of your business growth depends on the relationships you build. The best place to connect with movers and shakers is by attending live events. Whether it is the host of the event, featured speakers or other attendees, you will build more solid relationships when you meet these people in-person to learn from and about them.

There are many events to choose from so our next article will feature tips on How to Decide Which Live Events You Should Attend!

Using brilliantly simple math to explore and articulate the one thing that challenges and connects us all undefined our emotions undefined the book Emotional Equations takes us from emotional intelligence to emotional fluency, offering a new way to manage our internal world.

Did you know that Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is responsible for 2/3 of the success business leaders find today -- more than IQ or experience level? And that 40-50% of your happiness is actually within your control, regardless of what nature or nurture gave you? While facing a good deal of despair (Despair = Suffering - Meaning) a few years ago, Chip started to develop what he calls "Emotional Equations" (EE) -- a new way of looking at emotions that helped him to better understand and manage his internal weather system. That deep exploration into the emotional building blocks that influence our daily lives led him to write the book, Emotional Equations. Now, after being vetted by some of the world's leading minds in psychology, the social sciences, and even a few top notch mathematicians, he is thrilled to share EE with us. His hope is that these equations help us find more happiness + success in our life as they have in his.

Do you have a question for Chip that you'd want answered on the show?
He has been honored with the highest accolade in the American hospitality industry, the coveted ISHC Pioneer award, and was one of four finalists for Hotels magazine’s “Corporate Hotelier of the World” award. The San Francisco Business Times named Chip the Most Innovative CEO – and JDV the “2nd Best Place to Work” – in the entire Bay Area.
After 24 years as Chief Executive Officer of the company he founded, Chip is now the “Chief Emotions Officer.” A committed philanthropist, he served on the board of Glide Memorial Church for nearly a decade and currently serves on the Burning Man Project and Esalen Institute boards. He created the San Francisco Hotel Hero Awards and founded the city’s Annual Celebrity Pool Toss event, which has raised millions for inner-city youth programs that now thrive in the troubled neighborhood where he launched his first hotel. Chip received his BA and MBA from Stanford University, and was awarded with an Honorary Doctorate in Psychology from Saybrook Graduate School & Research Center, where he is the school’s 2012 Scholar-Practitioner in residence.
Make Space NOW...the Holidays are Coming!!

Yes, the holiday season is right around the corner & things are going to get busy, well even busier than they are right now! Think about how "full" your life is and in just a few short weeks you will be adding even more obligations and tasks to your "To Do List"!

WE want to share with you 3 things you can do NOW to help ensure you are happy, successful & stress-less this upcoming holiday season!

1) Clear the Physical Clutter!
You might have a small pile of papers on your desk, mail on the kitchen counter or clothes on the bedroom floor, well, these things are eating up your energy, whether you realize it or not. Take time to clear the clutter, one small pile at a time, and you'll be surprised at how much lighter you feel. Fix those things in your physical space that are slightly annoy you, such as the door handle that sticks or the internet connection that is running slow. Once the holiday season is in full swing these things are going to REALLY annoy you if they aren't taken care of!

2) Clear the Mental Clutter!
Just like there is clutter in your physical space, there is clutter in your mental space that is zapping you of precious energy. Things like negative self-talk & limiting beliefs can keep you from feeling 100%! To ensure you stay happy this holiday season be aware of what you are "inputting" into you mind. Turn off the news and don't have conversations with negative people. Did you know you can only think of one thing at at time? Repeating affirmations can be a great way to keep a positive mindset!

3) Clear the Clutter in Your Calendar!
Take a good hard look at how you spend your time and find ways in which you can receive a better ROI (return on investment)! For example, in-person meetings often take up 2-3 hours of your precious time. Recognize when you can meet over the phone, instead of in-person, to get the same result accomplished. Also, are there other people that can handle errands and tasks you are currently taking care of, things like shopping, picking up dry cleaning, post office or bank runs? Time to let go of doing it all & delegate!!

Once you clear the clutter in your physical, mental & time space you'll be ready to have a happy holiday season!

Do you have any other tips? Please share below...
